Foreign military observers to visit Exercise Iron Wolf 2019-1

Lithuania seeks to ensure transparency and demonstrates openness, therefore military observers from Belarus, Russia, and also from Finland and Sweden have been invited to visit multinational Exercise Iron Wolf 2019–1 currently running in Lithuania. Military observers from Belarus and Sweden will conduct a visit to Lithuania on June 18–20 and will observe the exercise on June 19.

On June 18 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis discussed matters of bilateral security cooperation, shared information on security challenges faced the Baltic and the Balkan regions and regional security situation at a meeting with Vice President of the Parliament of Montenegro Genci Nimanbegu and delegation of members of the Montenegro-Lithuania Parliamentary Friendship Group.

On June 19–20 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis will take part in the Baltic Defence Committee meeting in Tartu (Estonia). He will discuss European Union defence initiatives and coordinate the Baltic countries’ positions concerning the Euro-Atlantic agenda with his counterpart of Latvia Artis Pabriks and of Estonia Jüri Luik.

In early June the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania and the Unites States Government signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance on procurement of radio communication equipment for the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The total sum paid for the tactical radio communication equipment for the Lithuanian Land Force amounts to over USD 3 million. The financing comes from the U.S. European Security Assistance Fund.

On June 17 Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas received Ambassador of Slovakia to Latvia and Lithuania Ladislav Babčan. Vice Minister underscored the importance of cooperation with Slovakia and thanked for the country’s contribution to the security of the Baltic region.

On June 17 the joint Foreign Affairs and Defence Ministers session of the European Union Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg addressed implementation of EU defence initiatives, progress made , and further decisions needed to enhance EU member states’ ability to respond to emerging threats properly.

On June 10 – 16 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled six times to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On June 16 NATO and partner countries’ forces training at multinational maritime-focussed Exercise BALTOPS conducted a demonstration amphibious landing operation on the coast in Nemirseta.

The operation was conducted by the UK Royal Marines, as well as the marines of the United States, Portugal and Romania, also, amphibious warfare ships of Poland and the U.S. ORP Gniezno and USS Fort McHenry, AV-8B attack aircraft of Spain, Merlin, Sea King and Sea Hawk helicopters of the United Kingdom and the United States in the role of air support. LNS Sėlis , LNS Aukštaitis, and Šakiai search and rescue ship of the Lithuanian Navy were ensuring safety of navigation in the area of operation.

“We highly appreciate the United Kingdom-led Joint Expeditionary Force initiative, which allows us planning of a quick response in a potential crisis situation in the eastern NATO flank. JEF project is of utmost importance for Lithuania," Vytautas Umbrasas, Vice-Minister of National Defence, said on June 13 at the meeting with the new Commander of Standing Joint Force Commander Major General Rupert Jones who has been in this post since November 2018.
