Lithuanian Armed Forces prepares for Exercise Defender 2020

On May 16 the Lithuanian Armed Forces Defence Staff, Lithuanian Land Force Staff, and the 1st Territorial Unit of the National Defence Volunteer Force held a meeting with representatives of Marijampolė municipality to present Exercise Defender 2020 organised by the United States of America in Lithuania next year.

Lithuania to head EU programme for simplified military mobility procedures

Today, May 14,  an agreement of fourteen members of the European Union on simplification of military mobility procedures was signed at a meeting in Brussels.  The programme aimed at concerting and simplifying the procedures applied to cross-border movement of forces between EU members states will be headed by Lithuania.

On May 13–14 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis will take part in the European Union Defence Ministers meeting in Brussels.

Minister R. Karoblis and ten of his EU counterparts will sign an international agreement on establishing a simplified military mobility procedures programme in Brussels. Implementation of the agreement involves the signatory countries seeking ways to make the movement of military personnel and equipment in Europe faster.

Former Minister of Defence of Belgium S. Vandeput awarded the National Defence System Medal of Merit

On May 13 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis presented the National Defence System Medal of Merit to former Minister of Defence of Belgium Steven Vandeput at a ceremony at the Embassy of Lithuania in Brussels. The medal has been bestowed for personal contribution to the development of the Lithuanian-Belgian defence cooperation.

Lithuania’s cyber security status report: more complex cyber-attacks, vulnerable devices and websites

“In terms of security efforts, the status of cyber security in Lithuania improved in 2018, however, we are observing a big increase of cyber incidents with malware. All recorded parameters show that cyberspace is a battlefield and requires no smaller security and defence efforts than a sea, on land or in the air,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis says.

 

According to the "National Cyber Security Report 2018" provided by the National Cyber Security Centre under the Ministry of National Defence 53,183 cyber-incidents were reported in Lithuania in 2018. The number is slightly smaller than in 2017, however a significant increase in complex cyber-attacks, 41%, was found.

On May 9–15 Lithuania is for the 10th time taking part in NATO’s NATO Crisis Management Exercise 2019 (CMX19). The exercise is designed to test in practice methods of the Alliance’s consultations, decision-making and crises response measures at political and strategic levels.

May 7, a homecoming ceremony was held for the 3rd Territorial Unit of Žemaitija Military District of the National Defence Volunteer Force deployed back after the United Nations Multinational Integrated Stabilization Mission, MINUSMA, in Mali, at  the in Klaipėda Castle Fortifications Square.  30 soldiers of the 4th rotation of the Force Protection Unit were presented with the National Defence System Medals for Deployment to International Missions for having ensured security of a military base compound in the province of Gao in the eastern part of Mali, for 6 months as part of the German Contingent. The 4th rotation was replaced in the area of operation by  soldiers of the 2nd Territorial Unit of Darius and Girėnas Military District of the National Defence Volunteer Force  in April earlier this year.
