Belarus faces no threat from the West, R. Karoblis assures

“Lithuania has a direct interest in securing the independence and territorial integrity of Belarus, as well as in extending the economic cooperation. Therefore I can say for certain that the sovereignty of Belarus is not under military or any other type of a threat - from the West,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis says responding to the reaction of Belarus to the deployment of the U.S battalion in Lithuania. “The battalion-sized unit which has been deployed in Lithuania until spring simply does not present any threat to Belarus, we really hope our neighbour’s reaction will be balanced.”

Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis will attend the NATO Defence Ministers’ meeting in Brussels on October 24–25. Minister R. Karoblis and his 28 NATO counterparts will discuss burden sharing among NATO allies, deterrence and defence, international NATO operations and missions. The Ministers will also address the EU and NATO cooperation in responding to hybrid threats.

On October 22–24 national cybersecurity and defence Exercise Cyber Shield 2019 takes place in Lithuania. The exercise convenes specialists from the public and the private sectors to train together. The 4th iteration of the exercise also for the first time includes media representatives in order to strengthen cybersecurity of news organisations.

As of October 21 Eimutis  Misiūnas assumes the position of the Vice Minister of National Defence overseeing procurement and acquisition at the National Defence System. He is replacing Giedrimas Jeglinskas who has been appointed as the NATO Assistant Secretary General for Executive Management and starts his work in Brussels.

Leadership of the National Defence System has taken a decision to dispose of the soviet-made Mi-8 helicopters and start negotiations on procurement of new helicopters. The new utility helicopters are planned to be used for search and rescue operations and for the tasks of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group in Lithuania.
