Cutting-edge defence technologies are being tested in the Baltic Sea to enhance European maritime security

On 19-20 August the Lithuanian Navy and Baltic Institute of Advanced Technology (BPTI) have conducted unique trials in the Baltic Sea: communication technologies have been tested that should enable real-time information exchange about the maritime environment using aerial, surface and underwater drones. These activities are conducted under the frame of the EU funded project OCEAN2020 designed for the development of military maritime innovations.

On 22 August 1994 the first Lithuanian peace support platoon LITPLA-1 of 32 soldiers led by Capt Artūras Chrapko left for Croatia. Just a quarter of a century has passed since that day – for this period precisely Lithuania has been participating in various international operations thus contributing to international efforts to create a more secure environment and stabilise situation in crisis-stricken regions.

The number of 1st year cadets in the Military Academy of Lithuania nearly doubles this year

Even though the numbers of school graduates are on the decrease, significantly more young people have been admitted to the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania. This year has seen the highest number of entrants since 2003 – 77 cadets, including 16 young women, have started the studies in the only higher education institution in Lithuania that provides officers for the Lithuanian Armed Forces. That makes almost double the number of young people that chose the path of an officer last year.

A team of arms control inspectors of Belarus are conducting an evaluation visit to a specified military unit in Lithuania on August 1 on the basis of the bilateral Agreement on Additional Confidence and Security-Building Measures between the Republic of Lithuania and the Republic of Belarus.

On August 1 change of command and rotations ceremony took place in the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group in Rukla. Representative of the German Army Lieutenant Colonel Peer Papenbroock will hand over the command to his fellow German representative Lieutenant Colonel Rouven Habel after having been in charge of the NATO eFP Battalion Battle Group Lithuania since February. Lt Col Rouven Habel is the commander of the 391st Mechanised Infantry Battalion of the Bundeswehr.
