First Military Attaché of the Republic of Korea will be accredited to Lithuania


October 29, accreditation ceremony of Military Attaché of the Republic of Korea (South Korea) to Lithuania Col Jong Kee Hong will take place at the Ministry of National Defence.


Military Attaché of the Republic of Korea to Lithuania who has been accredited to Poland since 2009 resides in Warsaw.

Military Attaché of the Republic of Korea Col. Jong Kee Hong has been serving in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Korea since 1992. He graduated from the Korea Military Academy, College of the Armed Force of the Republic of Korea,National Defence College of Poland, and holds MA degree of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Before appointment to the post of Deputy Chief of Intelligence Staff in the mission of a division of the Armed forces of the Republic of Korea in Iraq he served as a surveillance company commander, and later - as battalion commander in the Land Force of the Republic of Korea.


Lithuania has not accredited military attaché to the Republic of Korea.


Lithuania does not develop neither active bilateral defence cooperation nor joint projects with the non-NATO state, the Republic of Korea. The opening initiatives were made this year on February 17 in Seoul as the Lithuanian Defence Minister Rasa Juknevičienė and National Defence Minister of the Republic of Korea Kim Tae-Young signed a Memorandum of Understanding on defence cooperation. Possibilities of cooperation were opened in such areas as international security and defence policy, defence reform and organisation of armed forces, projects of stabilization and reconstruction in multinational operations, nonproliferation, arms control and disarmament, defence industry and procurement, communications and information systems, counter-terrorism, cyber defence, energy security, education and training, etc.


On 15-21 February 2010 delegation headed by the Minister of National Defence of Lithuania paid a visit in Seoul. North Korean and Lithuanian Ministers met officially.


The first visit of representative of the Republic of Korea Lt Col Kwon Soon Woo and Lt Col Lee Ha Young in Lithuania took place from March 27 to April 2 of 2010. The guests were invited to observe „PRT-12 Challenge 2010" exercise in Kairiai Military Area (Klaipėda Distr.) They also visited Lithuanian Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragoon Training Battalion in Klaipėda.
