October 29-30, Minister of National Defence of Lithuania Rasa Juknevičienė took part in an international conference „Role of Women in Global Security" in Copenhagen. Modern world observes increasingly an expanding women's role in conflict prevention and resolution, as well as during peace-building, and post-conflict reconciliation and reintegration periods. The conference will mark the 10th Anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 regarding security of women and peace-building. It is the first UN Security Council Resolution to define international system protecting and promoting the unique and underemployed engagement of women in conflict resolution and peace reconstruction.

Minister of National Defence delivered an address on women's role in peacekeeping operations where Lithuania has experience from the multinational ISAF mission in Afghanistan. Lithuanian Minister also had an excellent opportunity to meet with the Defence Minister of Denmark Gitte Lillelund Bech. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen was also present in the event.

Many members of the Alliance already have national plans for putting into effect the Resolution 1325 with regard to the importance placed on the implementation of the Resolution in the Alliance. Lithuania received recommendations to prepare national action programme and appoint national coordinator for solutions of the issues.

Organisers of the conference were the US Embassy in Denmark and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. Partners of the event were the United States Institute of Peace and US embassies in the Baltic and Nordic States. In the conference three-fold perspective of women's role in global security was provided: women's role in peacekeeping operations, in post-conflict reconciliation and integration, and in economic development. Participants of the conference also shared their experience in Afghanistan, Liberia and Uganda.
