On May 28–30 former Chief of the Defence Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Maj Gen (Ret.) Vitalijus Vaikšnoras attended meetings of Ukraine’s strategic-level Defence Reform Advisory Board held in Kyiv. The meetings addressed progress achieved in the reform, Ukraine’s internal changes and work for the nearest while.

On May 30 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis met with Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze and his delegation who are conducting a visit in Lithuania. The meeting officials discussed challenges in the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea regions and defence cooperation of Lithuania and Georgia. Both sides reaffirmed their intent to continue the cooperation in the areas of military training, education and exercises, and concerning cyber security and strategic communication.

As NATO is celebrating its 70th anniversary and Lithuania her 15th anniversary in NATO this year, the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence and NATO Force Integration Unit (NFIU) in Vilnius are beginning a cycle of projects “NATO Day in a Region — Come, See, and Learn About Those Who Protect Us!” in Varėna and Merkinė. Such events are planned to be organised in four more cities of Lithuania by the end of the year.

Communications specialists of the Lithuanian Armed Forces are training at international NATO communications Exercise Steadfast Cobalt 2019 in Bucharest (Romania) as of mid-May. The annual training event of the Alliance tests readiness of the NATO Communication and Information Systems Group (NCISG) to ensure information exchange among NATO forces and headquarters and communication worldwide.

On May 24 inaugural deployment of the United Kingdom-led Joint Expeditionary Force (Maritime) (JEF) M) Baltic Protector began in the Baltic Sea. Exercise training audience will include soldiers of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and one of the final phases of the exercise will take place on Lithuania’s coast.

Lithuanian Armed Forces students of the Joint Command and General Staff Course at the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) took part in joint staffs exercise Joint Resolve 2019 in Warsaw (Poland), held for the first time by the Baltic Defence College and the Polish War Studies University (WSU) on May 6–25. The multinational exercise improved students’ ability to execute operations and formulate solutions to complex NATO Article-5 operational problems by developing and executing a joint operational plan using standard NATO processes.

“Now that it is in a very dangerous threat environment, Lithuania should continue what it is doing which is increase defence spending from 2 to 2.5 in overtime. That is appropriate for a frontline state which unfortunate Lithuania and other Baltic states are,” the former US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Walt Slocombe says. He is visiting Lithuania this week in a delegation of defence and security experts and shapers led by the Atlantic Council, an influential analytical centre of the U.S., in order to get first hand impressions about the Baltic security situation.

“There can be no planning of an effective defence without a strong bond between the military and the society and support from the latter. Public trust is one of the cornerstones of a strong military, therefore a dialogue between an active, civic society and a modern and open Armed Forces is a vital guarantee of the security of our state,” Minister of National Defence   Raimundas Karoblis said in Tauragė greeting the audience and participants of Public and Military Day.
