On the eve of the 12th anniversary of the founding, the Vytenis Battalion to receive American HMHWV all-terrain vehicles

On 25 February the Lithuanian Grand Duke Vytenis General Support Logistic Battalion based in Marijampole marked the 12th anniversary of its founding.

Performing over ten years within the composition of the Motorised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf, the Vytenis Battalion was restructured into a general support logistic unit in the autumn 2003. The Battalion provides general logistic support to all military units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces; its personnel take part in international military exercises, peacekeeping missions.

On the eve of the Battalion's 12th anniversary, the General Support Battalion received a shipment of HMHWV all-terrain vehicles purchased from the U.S. support funds according to the deal signed in 2003.

Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to pay an official visit to Italy

On 23-24 February, Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Major General Valdas Tutkus will be with an official visit to Italy.


While in Italy, Major General Tutkus is scheduled to meet Commander of the Italian Armed Forces Admiral Giampaolo di Paola. The meeting is expected to address a bilateral co-operation, international operations and expansion of NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission in Afghanistan. The Alliance is preparing to take over leadership of the two existing Provincial Reconstruction Teams PRT) from the US and to form two new ISAF PRTs with Lithuania and Spain in the lead. Italy will be in the lead of the PRT switched to ISAF from the US and will provide the Forward Support Base.

Lithuanian National Defence leadership discussed international operations with Deputy Supreme Allied Command Europe

On Friday, 18 February the NATO Deputy Supreme Allied Command Europe (DSACEUR) General John Reith, who was last week with an official two-day visit to Lithuania, informed Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Major General Valdas Turkus of the ongoing NATO and EU operations and prospects for the operations.


At the meeting, which was also attended by the command of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, the high ranking NATO military official spoke about the EU military operation ALTHEA in Bosnia and Herzegovina, operations in Kosovo and Iraq, the International Security Assistance Force mission in Afghanistan.


The Generals also discussed the development of the NATO Rapid Reaction Force
