Squadron of the Lithuanian Special Operations Force to be on duty within NATO's Reaction Force 2005.06.28
![]() As of 1 July the Aitvaras-05 Squadron of the Lithuanian Special Operations Force (SOF) is due to take on a duty within the NATO's Response Force (NRF).
The squadron of the Special Operations Force is the second unit of the Lithuanian Armed Forces contributed to the NRF. Since the beginning of this year a logistics unit (a water purification unit) of the Lithuanian Armed Forces has been carrying out a duty within the NRF.
The Lithuanian SOF squadron will be assigned to a component of the NFR Special Operation Forces, which has mainly been formed from troops serving with military forces of old-timer NATO member states. This component will be trained to accomplish tasks assigned to the Special Forces to include special reconnaissance, forward actions etc. |

German troops to replace Dutch counterparts in air policing mission in Lithuania 2005.06.28
![]() On Thursday, 30 June a ceremony of handing over the NATO's air policing mission in the Baltic States will take place at the Siauliai airfield of the Lithuanian Air Force. The outgoing Dutch troops will be replaced by their counterparts from Germany. German troops will be patrolling the airspace of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia by four F-4G Phantom aircraft fighters. The ceremony is expected to be attended by the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Lithuania, HE Pim Dumore, Adviser to the Herman Embassy to Lithuania, Mr Joachim Schemel, Undersecretary of the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania, Mrs Jurate Raguckiene, Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force, Colonel Jonas Marcinkus. Representatives from the Dutch, German, Latvian and Estonian Air Forces are also expected to attend. |

Chief of Defence of Lithuania left for Afghanistan 2005.06.23
![]() On Monday, 27 June Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Major General Valdas Tutkus, left for Afghanistan, where he is to meet with Lithuanian troops serving within the composition of the Lithuanian-led Ghor Provincial Reconstruction Team based in the provincial capital of Chakhcharan.
The Lithuanian Chief of Defence is visiting Afghanistan at the invitation of the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General James L. Jones. Major General Tutkus with a delegation will also visit the capital city of Kabul, where is scheduled to meet with leadership of the NATO's International Security Assistance Force. |

Lithuanian military officer to receive an honourable US award 2005.06.22
![]() On Wednesday, 22 June, in Vilnius, at an official ceremony, which was held at the Ministry of National Defence, the US Ambassador to Lithuania Stephen Mull awarded the Legion of Merit to Lieutenant Colonel Gediminas Grina. Lieutenant Colonel Grina was awarded the Legion of Merit (Degree of Officer) decoration of the President of the United States of America, authorised by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, for his exceptionally meritorious service during his term of service as Lithuanian Defence, Military, Naval and Air Attache to the United States from October 2001 to August 2004.

New forms of military co-operation between Lithuania and Sweden to be discussed in Stockholm 2005.06.20
![]() On Tuesday, 21 June the Lithuanian National Defence Minister Gediminas Kirkilas will be with an official visit to Sweden. The schedule for the Minister's visit will include meetings with the Swedish Minister of Defence Leni Bjorklund, Minister of Foreign Affairs Urban Ahlin, Vice-Chairman of Defence Committee Tone Tinsgard, and visit to the Peacekeeping Operations Centre. The meeting will focus on issues covering security and defence policy, participation of the countries in international operations, crisis management and possible new forms of bilateral co-operation. |

Lithuanian troops arrived in Afghanistan's Ghor province 2005.06.20
![]() On Monday, 20 June 65 Lithuanian troops arrived in Chakhcharan in Afghanistan, where they are to lead one of the North Atlantic Alliance's reconstruction team in Afghanistan's Ghor province with a base located in the provincial capital of Chakhcharan.
The first group of the Lithuanian-led provincial reconstruction team came from Herat to Chakhcharan by vehicles. Their mission will be to ensure security in the local airfield and provide conditions necessary for a smooth airlifting of military personnel and cargo from Heart airfield.

Lithuanian and Finnish Ministers of Defence to meet in Rukla 2005.06.15
![]() On Thursday, 16 June the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas is scheduled to meet with the Finnish Minister of Defence Seppo Kriinen in Rukla, Lithuania's military training area. During the meeting, the Ministers are expected to address bilateral co-operation, European Union's defence policy and involvement in international operations.
After the meeting the ministers will sign the memorandum of understanding between the Ministries of Defence of Lithuania and Finland concerning co-operation in the fields of research of defence equipment, development, defence acquisition and industry. The document provides for the establishment of a joint co-ordination group, which will be authorised to consider and co-ordinate co-operation related projects and other issues. |
