Land Force Commander on visit to Sweden

From March 18 to 21 Lithuanian Land Force Commander Brigadier General Arvydas Pocius will be visiting Sweden on invitation of General Major Sverker Göranson, Commander of Swedish Land Force. The generals plan to discuss further co-operation and exchange experience, and to observe the exercise for the Swedish Land Force units ”Winter Sun 07".

Soldiers of Special Operations unit to take part in exercise in Norway

imgSoldiers of Special Operations unit of Lithuanian Army will take part in the largest international exercise this year ”Cold Response 2007" held in Norway. One of the key issues of the exercise ”Cold Response 2007" is co-operation between NATO and the United Nations, as well as land, sea, and air conventional and special forces of other countries. The exercise will take place in the northern part of Norway.

Commemoration of March 11 in Lithuanian Army

Lithuanian Army will celebrate the 17th Restoration of Independence anniversary on March 11. National flag of Lithuania will be hosted in subdivisions' headquarters, solemn troop lines, concerts, and other events will take place. On occasion of the event recognition signs will be bestowed on the most deserving soldiers and civilians.

Ukraine Defence Minister visits Lithuania

National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas will meet Ukrainian Defence Minister Anatolij Grycenko on formal visit to Lithuania on March 13. The meeting also attended by the Commander of Lithuanian Forces General Major Valdas Tutkus will address bilateral co-operation, participation in international operations, and information exchange on the political situation and goals of Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic integration.

Land Force Commander observed one of the largest NATO exercise

imgOn March 7 Brigadier General Arvydas Pocius, Commander of Lithuanian Army Land Force, came back from Norway where he was observing one of the largest international exercise for cold climatic conditions "Cold Response 2007". International exercise "Cold Response 2007" is aimed at training joint land, marine and air forces to perform intensive all sorts of response to crises operations under cold-climate conditions. The 10-day exercise was attended by 8500 troops from 18 countries.

Agreement on the Baltic Air Surveillance and Control System development signed

National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas signed an intergovernmental Lithuanian, Latvian, and Estonian agreement on March 2 on the Baltic Air Surveillance and Control system (later herein referred to as BALTNET) development. The new agreement replaces the BALTNET agreement signed in 1998 that has been in force till present and provides that the air surveillance BALTNET will also perform the control function.

National Defence Minister J.Olekas emphasised the importance of EU police missions in Kosovo and Afghanistan

imgIn the informal EU Defence Ministers meeting that had taken place in Wiesbeden (Germany) on March 1 and 2 National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas greeted the EU police mission for Afghanistan that is due to be started this summer and highlighted the importance of it reaching the province. According to the minister, Lithuania leading the Ghowr Reconstruction Team supports the mission strongly and is ready to provide assistance in the fields of logistics, transportation, and security.
