The first Georgian Defence Attaché accredited to Lithuania

The first Georgian Defence Attaché Maj. Lela Chikovani was accredited to Lithuania on June 26 at the Ministry of National Defence. Residing in Vilnius she will be also be accredited to Latvia, Estonia and Poland. Maj. L.Chikovani is the only woman among the 30 defence attachés currently accredited to Lithuania.  

The first woman in the diplomatic corps of the defence attachés accredited to Lithuania was the USA Defence and Air Force Attaché Col. Tiiu Kera who resided in Vilnius from 1993 to 1995. Later the rank of Brigadier-General was conferred on her.  

The Georgian Defence Attaché was be accredited by the MoND Undersecretary Renatas Norkus with the Georgian Ambassador for Lithuania David Aptsiauri, and Georgian Deputy Defence Minister for International Relations and Euro-Atlantic Integration Batu Kutelia on official visit to Lithuania as observers.  

Bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and Georgia was launched in 2001. Lithuania mainly supports Georgia in military training: it provides financing for studies of Georgian military at General Jonas Zemaitis Lithuanian War Academy and the Baltic Defence College, and also for internship of the civilians at the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence. Lithuania provides consultations for Georgian officials in the fields of defence reforms, public relations, and logistics.    

Lithuanian Defence Attaché to Georgia Col. Lt. Albertas Charzevskis was accredited in Autumn 2005; two Lithuanian officers are deployed to the UN Observation Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG).
