KFOR -19 welcomed home and PRT-9 farewelled in Kaunas War Museum Garden

April 21, soldiers after mission in Kosovo will be formally met and new rotation for Afghanistan mission will be deployed from Vytautas the Great War Museum Garden. Lithuanian KFOR-19 platoon having returned from the NATO-led military operation in Kosovo in the beginning of April and new rotation of Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-9) before deployment to Afghanistan will line in a single formation in Kaunas War Museum Garden.

 

Before celebratory formation holly mass will be celebrated in St. Archangel Michael Church for the rotation departing for Afghanistan. Solemn ceremony in the War Museum Garden will follow with Minister of National Defence Rasa Jukneviciene, Mayor of Kaunas Municipality Andrius Kupcinskas, acting Chief of Defence Chief of Defence Staff Adm.(R.) Kestutis Macijauskas, and other high officials of Lithuanian Armed Forces and Kaunas Municipality, and relatives of the soldiers as guests.

 

During the ceremony decorations will be bestowed upon KFOR-19 platoon troops. Platoon that has recently come back from the international mission in Kosovo was mainly manned by members of NDVF Darius and Girenas Military District 2nd Territorial Unit. KFOR-19 were next-to-last rotation deployed to the NATO peace support operation in Kosovo. KFOR-20 that replaced KFOR-19 will be the last capability Lithuania is deploying to Kosovo.

 

Minister of National Defence R. Jukneviciene will present national flag of the Republic of Lithuania to the departing PRT to take with them to Afghanistan, and small gifts on national subject-matter.

 

PRT-9 unit based on General Romualdas Giedraitis Artillery Battalion will take over the mission from the currently deployed rotation 8 in May. The mission will be conducted by more than 150 troops. PRT-9 military contingent will be in command of Maj. Alvydas Siuparis, Commander of Artillery Battalion.
