Change of Defence Attache of Hungary for Lithuania

On July 20, in the Ministry of National Defence the ceremony of farewell with the Defence Attache of Hungary for Lithuania Lieutenant Colonel Emil Gal who is leaving the office and accreditation ceremony of the new Defence Attaché of Hungary for Lithuania Colonel Szabolcs Szilagyi was held.

On the occasion of farewell for personal input while strengthening Lithuanian and Hungarian cooperation in the field of defence Lt Col E.Gal was awarded National Defence System Medal of Merit. He served as a Defence Attaché for Lithuania since 2007.

Minister of National Defence Visited the United States Aircraft Carrier

On July 19, Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė  and representatives of the Lithuanian Armed Forces visited aircraft career of the U.S. Military Naval Forces in Europe and Africa "USS Dwight D.Eisenhower",  which  was moored close to Brest city in France. Representatives of the Government of Lithuania and Lithuanian Armed Forces were invited to visit the U.S. aircraft career by the U.S. Military Naval Forces in order to strengthen cooperation between both countries. During the visit Lithuanian delegation was introduced the U.S. Navy capabilities, as well as working and living conditions of the crew in the ship.

76th anniversary of S. Darius and S. Girėnas' flight across the Atlantic Ocean

76 years after the transatlantic flight of legendary Lithuanian pilots S.Darius and S.Girėnas will have passed on July 17. The event will be marked at the monument of S.Darius and S.Girėnas in soldiers' cemetery of Aukštieji Šančiai.

Deed of S.Darius and S.Girėnas is significant for the world's aviation history because Lithuanian pilots flew the distance of 6411 kilometres in 37 hours 11 minutes without landing, i.e. set the second best contemporary world's result of duration of flight without landing.

Lithuania and Afghanistan provides financing for the first bitumen layer ever in Chaghcharan streets

imgBeginning of asphalt works in Chaghcharan, provincial capital of Ghowr, were opened on July 14. Several of the main streets of Chaghcharan were selected for covering with bitumen layer for the first time in the history of Ghowr. The project was launched on the funds allocated By the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania for development cooperation as well as on financing from the national budget of Afghanistan.

Committees of Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania supported strategy of Lithuania's activities in Afghanistan

imgJuly 15, joint closed-door session was held by Committees of National Security and Defence and Foreign Affairs of Seimas to consider once again Strategy 2009-2013 of Lithuania's participation in the activities of international community in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Representatives of both Committees expressed political support for the draft of the document. The Strategy will be processed in a session of the Government. Once the document is approved, the Government will commit responsible institutions to prepare the plan of implementation.

Representatives of international media visited Ghowr province

imgDelegation of international media representatives have been visiting Ghowr province protected by the Lithuanian-led PRT-9 from July 12 to 14. Trip to Afghanistan of the delegation composed of Georgian, Canadian, New Zealandian, Dutch, Serbian, Slovakian and Hungarian members was organised by the USA in order to represent in a wider prospect of activity of the NATO International Security Assistance Force operation. Civilian and military personnel of Chaghcharan PRT-9 arranged programme for the visiting media representatives.

NATO holds third air training event in the Baltic States

imgOn July 14-15 exercise of air capabilities organised by Allied Air Component Command Headquarters Rammstein will be held in the airspace of the Baltic States. The exercise is aimed at enhancing interoperability of Lithuanian, Latvian, and Estonian national air space surveillance and control capabilities to develop a unanimous NATO air defence system, improving procedures of NATO Baltic Air-space policing, and demonstrating solidarity of the allies with the Baltic States.

On July 12 soldiers of Lithuanian Armed Forces solemnly paraded in a formation of flags and divisions in the Cathedral-Basilica Square of Vilnius in the Inauguration Ceremony saluting the new President of the Republic of Lithuania and the Commander-in-Chief of Lithuanian Armed Forces Dalia Grybauskaitė. Commanders of services of Lithuanian Armed Forces were formally introduced to the President.

Readiness of Lithuanian troops for duty in EU Battlegroup will be evaluated

imgFrom July 13 to 17 around 250 soldiers of King Mindaugas Mechanised Infantry Battalion will participate in a „Calm Response" exercise in Gaižiūnai Military Area (Jonava Distr.). The exercise will be held to evaluate readiness of the Battalion's 1st Motorised Infantry Company for standby period in the EU Battlegroup. In the exercise soldiers will have to fulfil various tactical tasks: march, assembly, assault, defence, and similar.
