Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania prolonged international engagements of the Lithuanian Armed Forces

On November 19 the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania passed a decision to prolong the term of participation of Lithuanian armed units - military and civilian personnel of the National Defence System - in international operations in the Balkan Region, Central and South Asia, Southern Caucasus and the Persian Gulf for another three years - until 31 December 2013. The decision of Seimas re-approved the same regions of participations as well as the same maximum overall number of military personnel and civilians working with Lithuanian Armed Forces (up to 420).

On November 19 members of the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan PRT-10 were invited to join an event organized to observe inauguration of the re-elected President Hamid Karzai by invitation of the Ghowr Governor. 

 

Provincial Governor Sayed Mohammad Iqbal Munib invited representatives of provincial administration, security and education sectors, religious leaders, influential provincial figures and local media to gather for the event in a hotel in the provincial capital Chaghcharan. Commander PRT-10 Col. Gediminas Macijauskas, Deputy Headof the Lithuanian Special Mission in Afghanistan Andrius Purvaneckas, advisor for development Justina Jakavonytė, and diplomatic personnel of the USA and Japan cooperating with the PRT followed live coverage together with local authorities.   The inauguration day, November 19, was announced a public holiday in the entire country.

Lapkričio 19 d. Krašto apsaugos ministerijoje apdovanoti leidinio „Lietuvos kariuomenės karininkai 1918-1953 m." rengėjai. Už nuoširdžią ir aktyvią veiklą, rengiant šį Lietuvos kariuomenei svarbų leidinį, krašto apsaugos ministrė Rasa Juknevičienė leidinio rengėjams įteikė padėkas.

„Jūs atlikote labai svarbų Lietuvos kariuomenės istorijai darbą, tačiau reikia tikėtis, kad knygų su tokiomis skaudžiomis biografijomis rašyti daugiau nebeteks," - dėkodama rengėjams sakė ministrė.

New Defence Attaché of Turkey accredited to Lithuania

imgOn November 18 new Defence Attaché of Turkey Col. Erdoğan Baykal was accredited to Lithuania at MoND.

 

During the ceremony Col. E. Baykal was congratulated on the new assignment by the Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas who also wished the incoming officer success in developing Turkish-Lithuanian defence cooperation.

 

The ceremony was also attended by the first advisor of the Turkish Embassy in Lithuania Osman Fahri Kasmet Sinav.

Defence Attaché of Turkey represents interest of his country in Lithuania, Latvia and Poland from his office in Warsaw (Poland).

November 18, Chief of Defence of Lithuania Maj. Gen. Arvydas Pocius will take part in a bilateral one day meeting with the Polish Chief of General Staff (Polish Chief of Defence) Gen. Franciszek Gągor in Warsaw, Poland.

 

Lithuanian Chief of Defence is also planned to meet the Polish Defence Minister Bogdan Klich in the framework of the meeting, he will also visit Operations Staff of Polish Armed Forces, and lay flowers at the grave for the unknown soldier.

November 16, Commander ISAF and Commander US Forces Afghanistan General Stanley A. McChrystal visited camp of the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan PRT. Simultaneously with his visit rotation ceremony between PRT-9 and PRT-10 of Lithuanian peacekeepers took place.

 

The handover of mission ceremony was also attended by the Lithuanian Land Force Commander Brig. Gen. Jonas Vytautas Žukas, the Head of the Lithuanian Special Mission in Afghanistan Ambassador HE Dainius Junevičius, Deputy Commander of ISAF Regional Command West Col. Maurizzio Sullib, Provincial Governor of Ghowr Sayed Mohammad Iqbal Munib, and leadership of the provincial administration.

Remembrance of R. Marcinkus, interwar period pilot of Lithuania, honoured in Poznan

imgNovember 12, delegation led by the Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas attended the tribute ceremony for Capt. Romualdas Marcinkus, fighter pilot of Lithuania of the interwar period, in Poznan, Poland.

 

During the ceremony in the Poznan Old Garrison Cemetery, Commonwealth Section, a new monument was sanctified for the Lithuanian fighter pilot and a renowned sportsman who fought with the French Air Force and the Royal Air Force during World War II. The monument is marked with an inscription testifying of a Lithuanian decent of the fighter pilot: „Flight Lieutenant R. Marcinkus (of Lithuania). Pilot. Royal Air Force. 29th March 1944".

Minister of National Defence to take part in the EU Defence Ministers' meeting in Brussels

On November 16-17 Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė will attend the meeting of the EU Defence Ministers, Brussels (Belgium). During the meeting Defence and Foreign Affairs Ministers of the EU countries will hold a discussion with the NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen. Lithuanian Defence Minister will meet bilaterally with the US Ambassador to NATO HE Ivo H. Daalder.

 

Minister R. Juknevičienė will also take part in a work dinner with the European People's Party uniting members of the right-wing parties of the EU during which the EU Defence Ministers representing right-wing political views will discuss questions of security.

Humanitarian aid-loaded „Spartan“ of the Lithuanian Air Force left for Ukraine

November 11, LAF „Spartan" (C-27J) took off freighted with humanitarian assistance medicines for the pandemic-hit Ukraine.

Government of Lithuania passed in a sitting on November 4 the decision that enacted the Ministry of Health and the Lithuanian Armed Forces to arrange a shipment of humanitarian aid and for the Lithuanian Armed Forces - to ensure delivery of the shipment to the pandemic flu-struck Ukraine.

Japan will provide financing for constructions of new school in Ghowr

Japanese civilian personnel serving in the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in Chaghcharan signed a contract with a local NGO on building a new school in Ghowr. Total value of the project amounting to around USD 93 m will be covered from Japan's funds. The new school is expected to provide education places for around 400 pupils, including girls.

 

The signing took place on November 8 in the Chaghcharan PRT camp, among the participants were the Deputy Head of Education Department of Ghowr Hidgull Azim, representatives of the Lithuanian Special Mission in Afghanistan and civilian personnel of other countries cooperating with the Lithuanian PRT, Commander PRT-9 Col. Alvydas Šiuparis, and others.
