Minister of National Defence met with ministerial delegation of the People’s Republic of China

October 13, Minister of National Defence met with a delegation of the Ministry of National Defence of the People’s Republic of China. The delegation was led by Deputy Director of the Foreign Affairs Department Maj Gen Jia Xiaoning.

 

“The visit will inspire a closer cooperation between our nations“, said R. Juknevičienė. Lithuanian Minister received invitation of Defence Minister of the People’s Republic of China to visit his country next year.

 

Guidelines of bilateral cooperation were laid down at the meeting, it was agreed to sign a contract related to military cooperation and investigate opportunities to exchange experience of training at military education institutions more actively.

Rasa Juknevičienė, Minister of National Defence, and Sven Toglfors, Swedish Defence Minister, discussed bilateral cooperation in military training, Nordic-Baltic partnership, energy security points and security situation in the region in a meeting on October 13.

 

“Sweden is one of our closest partners and neighbors despite being a non-NATO country. I am really happy about our cooperation and shared notion of security“, said R.Juknevičienė at the meeting.

Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė together with NATO Defence Ministers and Partners discussed the mission in Afghanistan in a two-day ministerial meeting which took place from October 5 to 6 in Brussels.

 

“The progress recognised in Afghanistan is crucial – the Ministers were introduced to information proving that insurgent attacks were fewer by 17 percent this year in contrast to the previous year. Moreover, the Ministers have agreed that the commitment to Afghanistan is lasting. Even after the termination of combat actions in 2014 the country will be in need of great support,” said R. Juknevičienė.

NATO exercise to take place in Lithuania in November

On November 1-12 Lithuania will host NATO Exercise Steadfast Juncture 2011 organised by the Allied Joint Force Command (JFC) based in Brunssum (the Netherlands) at the Lithuanian Armed Forces’ Pabradės Training Area.

According to the Exercise scenario a fictitious NATO-led crisis response operation will be conducted and humanitarian assistance delivered under a United Nations’ mandate.

 

Steadfast Juncture 2011 is a NATO command post exercise aimed at certifying NATO Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFC) Headquarters and Allied Force Command (FC) Headquarters Heidelberg Deployable Joint Staff Element (DJSE 2) to command and control a multinational deployed force for NATO Response Force (NRF) 2012 standby period.

Lithuanian Defence Minister touched upon the operations in Libya, Kosovo and off the Horn of Africa together with NATO Defence Ministers at the meeting in Brussels which commenced on October 5.

 

“The Ministers focused on these NATO operations and evaluated the operation in Libya positively. A considerable part of the Ministers pointed out that the operation testified to NATO readiness to respond quickly and efficiently”, R. Juknevičienė said.

October 4, Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius, Chief of Defence of Lithuania, pays a visit to Afghanistan where he is planned to meet with Lithuanian peacekeepers, and representatives of the administration of Ghor province and command of NATO operation in Afghanistan.

 

In a meeting with Deputy International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Commander Lt Gen James Bucknall and Deputy Commander of the NATO Training Mission Afghanistan (NTM-A) Jack Kem Lithuanian Chief of Defence will address the transfer of responsibility to the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) as well as NATO’s role in country when the transition is completed. Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius will discuss participation of Lithuanian soldiers in training Afghan national security and police forces with the representatives of NATO command.
