March 12, Permanent Secretary of Defence of the Ministry of Defence of Finland Lt Gen Arto Räty paid a visit to the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania. Vice Minister of National Vytautas Umbrasas and the guest discussed relevant matters of the common European Security Policy, the approaching Lithuania’s Chairmanship of the EU Council, NATO Transformation, the upcoming NATO Chicago Summit in Maya in Chicago, and other issues.

Chief of Defence of Estonia will pay a visit in Lithuania

On March 13 and 14 Chief of Defence of Estonia Brig Gen Riho Terras will pay a work visit in Lithuania. It will be the first visit of Brig Gen R. Terras who assumed the duties in December 2011 in Lithuania, therefore the key goal of the visit will be of an awareness character – to familiarize with the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

 

During the two-day visit the guest will meet with the Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė, Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius, members of the Committee on National Security and Defence of the Seimas. He will also pay a visit to the Air Surveillance and Control Command in Karmėlava and the Motorised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf in Rukla.

Defence Attachés of foreign countries paid a visit to the Lithuanian Military Academy

March 6, foreign Defence Attachés accredited to Lithuania paid a visit to the Lithuanian Military Academy by invitation of the Commandant of the Academy Col Gintaras Bagdonas. The meeting was held to familiarize military representatives of Belarus, China, Denmark, France, Georgia, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Ukraine and the United States of America with the Lithuanian Military Academy providing military and academic education in Lithuania.

 

Representatives of the Academy introduced to the guests Army Command and Staff Officer Course, paid a visit to the Academy’s museum, library and barracks.

On Thursday Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė met with Defence Minister of Turkey İsmet Yilmaz who paid a visit in Lithuania by the Lithuanian Minister’s invitation. In a meeting both Ministers discussed the upcoming NATO Summit in Chicago, the operation in Afghanistan, NATO Air Policing mission, and other points.

 

“We have exchanged views on cooperation and regional security issues, and reached some agreement points regarding cooperation areas particularly important for Lithuania: the Turkish representatives assured that as one of the most active supporters of the Energy Security Centre Turkey will continue rendering assistance in the future as well through contribution to concrete initiatives and projects of the Centre,” R. Juknevičienė after the meeting.

Exposition of girls’ drawings put up in Chaghcharan

An exposition of drawings of Gari Ghazai schoolgirls was put out at the base of Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT). Over a hundred of drawings were submitted to the exposition, authors of the best works will be awarded by the PRT personnel during the opening ceremony on March 22.

 

The Lithuanian-led PRT develops close cooperation with the schools of Chaghcharan and support them within its scope of resources. The PRT personnel delivered to Gari Ghazai girls’ school learning means – task books, writing, drawing and other – that last year was amassed via the charitable campaign “Cooperation Makes Life Sweeter” organised in Lithuania by the Family Assistance Centre.

Minister of National extended sympathy to the Minister of Defence of Poland

Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė extended her sympathies to the Polish Defence Minster regarding the railway accident which has claimed many lives and caused many injuries including those of the Polish military. “In the name of the Lithuanian community I wish to say that we share you sorrow and extend our deepest condolences to the families of those perished”, said R.Juknevičienė in the letter of sympathy.

Baltic Air Commanders will meet for a work session in Kaunas

On March 5 and 6 Commanders of the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian Air Forces will conduct a meeting at the Headquarters of the Lithuanian Air Force in Kaunas. The meeting will be attended by Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force Maj Gen Edvardas Mažeikis, Col Aivars Mežrs, Commander of the Latvian Air Force, and Commander of the Estonian Air Force Lt Col Jaak Tarien will address relevant points of the Baltic Air Forces, bilateral and trilateral projects underway, exchange offers on further enhancement of cooperation in the Baltic Air Forces.

 

Collaboration between the Baltic Air Forces is really intense. The most of cooperation between the countries is done through the implementation of the Baltic Air Surveillance Network and Control System (BALTNET) project.

On March 6 and 7, Director General for Capabilities and Armaments of the Ministry of National Defence Brig Gen Almantas Leika and Armaments and Control Systems Department of MOD Col Valdas Šiaučiulis participate in the meeting of the Nordic Defence Cooperation Military Coordination Committee (NORDEFCO MCC) in Copenhagen (Denmark)where Nordic-Baltic military cooperation will be addressed.

 

In the meeting representatives of the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian Armed Forces will share information on the Baltic Defence Cooperation and projects underway with the colleagues from the Nordic countries. In their turn, the Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish representatives will represent military cooperation of the Nordic countries. A discussion on the areas most beneficial in terms of the Nordic-Baltic cooperation is foreseen.

Planning phase of the Multinational Host Nation Support Exercise Baltic Host 2012

March 1, national-level planning process of the multinational Host Nation Support (HNS) event Baltic Host 2012 involving representatives of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and other Lithuania’s Ministries and Services began at the Joint Headquarters of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

 

The planning phase will be finalized with an endorsement of a national exercise schedule on March 16 according to which Lithuania will render HNS to the allies during the exercise.

 

“This conference is a national part of the planning phase of the multinational HNS exercise Baltic Host 2012”, said Audronė Kaladžinskienė, representative of the Mobilization Department under the Ministry of National Defence. “Baltic Host 2012 is the largest multinational HNS or so-called “map” exercises to be held this year. It will take place in the end of this June and the beginning of July in all the three Baltic countries simultaneously. The aim of the exercise is to test national capacity to receive allied forces of a set size in the Baltic countries”, she said.

March 2, a formal two-day meeting of the Baltic Land Forces’ Commanders in Vilnius, initiated by Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force Maj Gen Jonas Vytautas Žukas, ended.

 

The meeting was attended by Maj Gen J. V. Žukas, Commander of the Land Force of the Estonian Armed Forces Col Indrek Sirel and Commander of the Latvian Land Force Col Dzintars Roga discussed trilateral and multilateral cooperation, current points of the Baltic Land Forces, and perspectives of cooperation.
