Vice Minister of National Defence will discuss in Brussels development of military capabilities of the European Union

March 22, Vice Minister of National Defence for Defence Policy and International Relations Vytautas Umbrasas will participate in the European Union’s Defence Ministers’ meeting in Brussels (Belgium). The event will focus on the points of developing military capabilities within the EU and strengthening partnerships. The EU Defence Ministers will also review the ongoing EU’s military operations and discuss security challenges in Europe and the entire world.

The most important point for Lithuania on the agenda of the meeting is strengthening partnerships with non-EU countries, especially with the Eastern neighbors, and cooperation in the context of the Common Security and Defence Policy. Dialog and cooperation with the Eastern neighbors is not intense, with an exception of Ukraine which is a part of the EU’s military operations and Battle Groups. Moldova has also recently launched an initiative on the development of cooperation in security and defence, at the meeting Lithuania will build on this momentum and support Moldova’s aspiration to begin a closer practical cooperation with the EU in defence sector.

Security issues in Europe and across the globe and the European Security Strategy will also be addressed in the meeting. The Ministers will review the ongoing EU military operations with a special focus on strategic operations present: the naval operation ATALANTA off the Somali coast, the EU Training Mission in Somalia EUTM SOMALIA and the operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina EUFOR ALTHEA. At the moment one Lithuanian naval staff officer serves in the ATALANTA HQ in Northwood (UK). There are also further plans regarding more active Lithuania’s participation in the operation.
