Vice Minister of National Defence took part in an international conference in Ukraine


On September 24–25 Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička took part in the XI international specialised exhibition ARMS AND SECURITY '2014 and an international conference on armament and military equipment in Kyiv, Ukraine, at invitation of the Minister of Defence of Ukraine.


After the opening ceremony on September 24 Vice Minister M.Velička and Defence Minister of Ukraine General Lieutenant Valery Galetey held a meeting to discuss points of bilateral Lithuanian-Ukrainian military cooperation.


Vice Minister M. Velička assured Ukraine’s Defence Minister that Lithuania supports and will continue supporting Ukraine’s aspirations of Euro-Atlantic integration, while the Ministry of National Defence and the Lithuanian Armed Forces will continue increasing assistance to the Ukrainian Armed Forces as it implements a reform and builds a modern western armed forces.


In his turn, the Ukrainian Defence Minister said he will spare no effort that the recently founded Lithuanian-Polish-Ukrainian Brigade is generated and developed successfully.


On September 25 Vice Minister M.Velička delivered an announcement on Security Challenges in Eastern Europe at the opening session of the international conference.


Lithuania and Ukraine has been cooperating actively in defence area since 2000. Lithuania's most substantial support is rendered to Ukraine's military training: Ukrainian servicemembers are invited to study English and improve their military qualifications at the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania, Division General Stasys Raštikis Lithuanian Armed Forces School, Military Medical Service, one Ukrainian officer is studying at the Baltic Defence College under Lithuania's sponsorship. In the period of 2007- autumn 2013 Ukrainian military personnel (staff officers, military medics, EOD and CIMIC specialists) were serving in the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team of Ghor province in Afghanistan. From 2011 to August 2014 Ukraine was deploying soldiers to the Lithuanian-led Air Mentoring Team in Kandahar and to the National Support Element in Kabul.
