Minister J. Olekas met with Ambassador of Hungary


On November 28 Minister of National Defence of Lithuania met with Ambassador of Hungary in Lithuania Zoltan Pecze.


At the Meeting Minister J.Olekas thanked the Ambassador of Hungary for the military personnel Hungary had deployed to Lithuania as part of the deterrence measures for the Baltic region agreed in NATO. Minister J.Olekas also offered Z. Pecze to consider a possibility of deploying a Hungarian company in Lithuania in the future. Hungary is the first European NATO ally that has sent rotating forces to Lithuania which are now successfully involved in combined training with U.S., Denmark’s and Lithuania’s forces.


The Hungarian military that will be deployed in Lithuania till the end of the year took part in the multinational Exercise Iron Sword 2014 which was running in Lithuania on November 3 through 13.


At the meeting the Minister of National Defence also welcomed the declaration approved by the Foreign Ministers of the Visegrad Group (Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary) which condemned the Russian aggression against Ukraine and expressed support to the Ukrainian Government on its way of implementing democratic reforms in the country. “We have to stand together as we demonstrate our support to the Government of Ukraine in this complicated period,” Minister J.Olekas said.


Cooperation between Lithuania and Hungary is developed on the basis of a bilateral defence contact and cooperation agreement endorsed in 1997.


Lithuanian soldiers have attended language, military observation, and other courses in Hungary. Also, Hungary was sharing its experience on NATO negotiations, drafting documentation, transformation of national armed forces according to NATO standards. In 2004 the Water Purification Unit of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Vytenis General Support Battalion was on standby for the 4th rotation of the NATO Response Force with a logistic unit of Hungary.


In the end of 2015 the Hungarian Defence Force will contribute an air contingent to the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission.
