We will be increasing our support to Ukraine, J. Olekas says

At a meeting with Minister of Defence of Ukraine Colonel General Stepan Poltorak on 24 November Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas discussed the security situation in Ukraine, possibilities for Lithuania to support the efforts of strengthening the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and cooperation in LITPOLUKRBIG format.

 

At the meeting Minister J.Olekas informed the Defence Minister of Ukraine of Lithuania’s resolve to increase assistance to his country the following year with a focus on the implementation of the joint LITPOLUKRBRIG project (Lithuanian, Polish and Ukrainian Brigade). “A joint brigade formed by Lithuania, Ukraine and Poland will provide an opportunity for Ukraine to learn from Lithuania’s and Poland’s experience of NATO integration and to develop efficient armed forces,” J. Olekas said.

The General Adolfas Ramanauskas Warfare Training Centre in Nemenčinė hosted the second and the final certification exercise held by the Lithuanian Armed Forces for logistic personnel preparing for service with the NATO Kosovo Force. The exercise trained representatives from 7 countries: the United Kingdom, Croatia, Poland, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary.

On November 24 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas will conduct a visit in Ukraine in the President of the Republic of Lithuania’s delegation. The Defence Minister will take part in the Council of Presidents of the Republic of Lithuania and Ukraine, and meet with Minister of Defence of Ukraine Colonel General Stepan Poltorak.

 

The Ministers will discuss the security situation in Ukraine, possibilities for Lithuania to support the efforts of strengthening the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and cooperation in the format of the joint Lithuanian, Polish and Ukrainian Brigade LITPOLUKRBIG.

A celebratory formation was conducted in the Cathedral Square of Vilnius and a parade marched down Gediminas Avenue to Independence Square on November 23 to commemorate Lithuanian Armed Forces Day. The formal event crowned a series of commemorative events that had taken place across Lithuania in commemoration of Lithuanian Armed Forces Day.

On November 21 Chief of Defence of Lithuania Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas and Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas took part in a meeting of President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg who has arrived for his first visit to Lithuania.

 

The Alliance's top international civil servant visited the Airspace Control Centre in Karmėlava which hosts the Joint Baltic Command and Reporting Centre. Its main function is to conduct air defence operations which encompasses providing command and control for the fighter-jets deployed on the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission.

On November 23-24 Commander of U.S. Army Europe (USAREUR) Lieutenant General Ben Hodges will make a visit to Lithuania and attend Lithuanian Armed Forces Day’s events at the invitation of the Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force.

As agreed in NATO on the enhancement of reassurance measures in the Baltic region, Denmark deployed its military personnel for combined training and exercises in Lithuania on November 19. Roughly 140 Danish scouts will be training side by side with reconnaissance personnel of the Lithuanian Land Force. The Danish contingent arrived and brought their combat equipment via Klaipėda Seaport.

Next year Belgium will send military personnel for combined training with NATO allies in Lithuania in composition of a battalion-sized NATO unit.

 

Minister of Defence of Belgium Steven Vandeput notified Lithuania’s Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas on the decision of his country at a meeting in Brussels of November 18.

The 12th of November: an Ilyushin military transport aircraft of the Russian Federation flying over neutral waters of the Baltic Sea near the borders of the Baltic States without advance filing of a flight plan and with its on-board transponder switched off was identified. The Russian aircraft was identified and escorted onto mainland Russia by fighter-jets of the Netherlands deployed in Malbork, Poland.

On November 19-20 the decade-long NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission will be presented to media outlets of Lithuania, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada and other countries at an international media event organised at the Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force.
